Floral print is in for just about anything, including bottoms. Shorts and skirts have been emblazoned with flowers all summer, but now that the cold weather is coming, legs are begging to be covered in prints. It’s a bold look, previously worn by the likes of Jessa on Girls. Up until recently, the most popular type of pants to see in a full print were pajamas, so it can be a difficult line to walk to make sure that you look like a fashionista and not a slob when you’re out in public. My stylish and daring sister recently wore loose, floral, high-waisted polyester pants when we walked around downtown Providence, Rhode Island, and she got some funny looks. Was it that people hadn’t caught on to the trend yet? Were they just jealous of her fancy pants? Did they think that she was wearing pajamas in public? In case you feel that you may be suffering from the last kind of looks, here are some tips to elevate your style from sleepyhead to fashionista.
To help look polished, make sure to iron or steam your pants. Nothing screams "pajamas” quite like wrinkles that suggest the garment was slept in. Make sure to tuck in your shirt as well. This will show off your stylish high waist, plus it will emphasize the fact that the pants have a button, fly, and possibly a belt (many things that pajamas typically don’t have.) If your pants have a drawstring, you probably have actually jammies, and you aren’t quite in on the trend.
Think of accessories. Wearing flip-flops or mules will only accentuate the P.J. look, so dress up your footwear. Consider heels, like how Miranda Kerr rocked floral crop pants this summer, or a cute pair of ballet flats. For bonus trend points, pair the pants with oxfords for a more collegiate look. Olivia Palermo tends to pair her floral crops with patterned heels, but for an everyday outfit with the already-bold loose pants, you already have enough boldness going on. Belts help to make it obvious that you are wearing legitimate pants; my sister removed the belt that came with her pants, then wished she had chosen to wear it.
When choosing jewelry, keep it simple. There will be so much going on with your lower half that you don’t need crazy jewelry to compete with it.
